Cairo Space Apps and IEEE Egypt Section are preparing for the International Space Apps Challenge for the second time in Egypt!
International Space Apps Challenge, held on April 23rd and 24th at more than 170 locations worldwide, is a two-day Hackathon where teams of technologists, scientists, designers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, developers and students across the globe collaborate and engage with publicly available data to design innovative solutions for global challenges.
NASA is leading this global collaboration along with other space agencies around the world. More than 200 data sources, including data sets, services and tools will be available for this challenge. During this two-day Hackathon, participants are asked to develop mobile applications, software, hardware, data visualization and platform solutions that could contribute to space exploration missions and help improve life on Earth.

Last year in Cairo, participants were asked to solve 35 challenges posted by NASA in 4 categories (Earth studies, space exploration, human health research and robotics) and the results were that they produced about 46 projects from Cairo; the largest number of projects produced from one city worldwide in 2015, Statistics here– The 230 participants were mostly university students and the formed groups were a great mix of science, engineering and design fields. Some groups were participating by their graduation projects and others were able to build the base of their startup during the 2-day challenge.
This year, and on the second episode of this event in Egypt, participants will try to solve NASA challenges in 48 hours at Zeweil City for Science and Technology University, on 23rd and 24th of April, then they will be judged at a local level and the top 2 teams will be nominated for the international judging, done by NASA. The international winners will be eligible to attend a NASA launch event.
Space Apps participants will create solutions to mission-related challenges broken into six categories: Aeronautics, International Space Station, Solar System & Beyond, Technology, Earth and the Journey to Mars. Many of the challenges are supporting the space exploration missions and help improve life on Earth.
“The International Space Apps is one of the greatest events that Egypt could host. Innovation is part of the youth characteristics. I encourage you all to delve into the topics of the International Space Apps, provide ideas, change perceptions and keep on to try to think about space exploration in the future and how do we better life on earth in the future” Prof. Dr. Farouk El-Baz in a Video Message to Space Apps Cairo Opening Ceremony 2015.
Cairo Space Apps, is organized by a group of enthusiastic youth, along with IEEE Egypt Section. This year, and after only one previous episode, Cairo has been chosen by NASA as one of a few exemplary sites for the Global Organizing Team to visit, and attend the hackathon.
