Wellness in Egypt is something that the new generation is spreading awareness about. Egypt has always been known for great food, culture, and history. However, health awareness, as much as it has always been there, is now at its peak. That being said, there is a new trend in town that has been rolling in on us for quite some time now. A green drink with so many varieties that people are demanding. It is not grass, nor a new powdered food coloring solution. This is matcha. Simple and clear. But what is matcha? And why is it trending nowadays as the new sophisticated cafe drink? Let’s find out.

Matcha, a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves, isn’t exactly new. Yes, not everyone knew it; no, it is far away from being a shiny “new thing.” Matcha has been around for centuries in Japan. It is revered in traditional tea ceremonies and is still to this day praised for its health benefits. However, in Egypt, it went from an obscure wellness trend to an essential item in most café menus almost overnight. The matcha trend started when health-conscious consumers and influencers began praising its high antioxidant content. 

Additionally, the highlight of how matcha can give an individual a natural caffeine boost without the crash was something that fed the trend even more. Another reason why it grew too popular is the green color aesthetic. Want to post a photo of your daily healthy routine with a touch of green mixed with purple berries and milk? Yes, this would be the ultimate aesthetic check for health gurus. And once they gave the drink their seal of approval, the rest of the market followed and quickly.

Walk into any café and you won’t just find a matcha latte anymore. You’ll see “iced vanilla rose/lavender matcha,” “pistachio matcha frappes,” or even “matcha tiramisu cups.” Why? Because in 2025, ordering matcha isn’t just about taste. Now matcha plays a role in forming a certain identity. It’s a drink that positions some as healthy.

A lifestyle statement that people use to communicate a certain message. Cafés have caught on fast. What started as a seasonal menu addition is now turning into a permanent fixture. Some cafés are even dedicating entire sections to varied matcha-based concoctions, including matcha-infused pudding and cheesecakes.

The Secret Ingredient: Innovation

Health benefits are all fun and games, but they are not the only factor that is driving this green trend. Yes, matcha is aesthetic and photogenic, but the secret here lies in the innovation of taking this trend to a whole new level. Egyptian cafés have never been ones to shy away from experimentation. They are now using matcha as a blank canvas. It pairs perfectly with creamy flavors, floral infusions, and local ingredients. Ones like hibiscus and rosewater, for example. And the result here is a constantly evolving menu that keeps customers always curious and increases the FOMO effect. It simply keeps them coming for more.

  • Symbol of Wellness: Associated with antioxidants, calm energy, and mindfulness. It is the perfect drink for health-focused marketing.

  • Customizable Appeal: Easily infused with local flavors to create unique, limited-time offerings.
  • Lifestyle Branding: Used by cafés to promote a modern, conscious, and trendy image.
  • Influencer-Driven: Social media influencers and health bloggers helped accelerate awareness and demand for matcha.
  • Youth-Centric: Appeals to younger audiences seeking new experiences and non-traditional café items.

Is Matcha Here to Stay?

It is safe to say yes. Matcha is not just a passing trend in Egypt. It is becoming a cultural flavor with the innovations of Egyptian cafés and how they add their own Egyptian twist of flavor to the drink. And as long as cafés keep innovating, we can expect Egypt’s matcha wave to keep rolling and maybe even go global.
