The lipstick effect… a catchy phrase indeed in the marketing and economic world. However, it is not just a catchy phrase. As a matter of fact, it is a decades-old observation. So what is the lipstick effect? It is when wallets tend to tighten.

This is when people tend to ignore any luxurious designer fashion, shoes, or anything that could cost them a fortune and start on buying those little indulgences, like, for example, a lipstick. But why? Why is it that in times of economic crisis, people crave a dash of joy through buying a $20 lipstick instead of saving to buy that $2,000 handbag? Is this what we call shopping therapy? Or what we call shopping addiction? Let’s delve into the psychology of it all.

Broke, Bored, Both, or Neither?

This is the golden question now, isn’t it? Are people nowadays truly buying lipstick (or its modern variations like fancy matcha drinks, skincare products, or even those limited-edition sneakers) out of need or is it some kind of coping mechanism? One that helps them stand tall in the face of economic frustration? Because we all know that inflation is no joke.

And nowadays, many households are cutting down on expenses just to afford a lifestyle that is doable. However, sales of small “feel-good” items are still increasing by the day. And that is, ladies and gentlemen, what we call psychology and not coincidence.

Tiny Luxuries, Big Statements

Think of the lipstick effect as our way of turning a blind eye towards the problems that come with today’s economy. We can’t buy the big dream, so we settle for its bite-sized cousin. Here’s what that looks like today:

  • Skincare minis instead of full-blown spa treatments
  • Affordable fashion collabs instead of couture gowns
  • Designer-inspired perfumes instead of the actual designer price tag
  • Subscription beauty boxes instead of luxury shopping sprees
  • The occasional bougie latte instead of a week-long getaway

These aren’t “needs” in the survival sense. You wouldn’t die without it, but you need to get your hands on it. These items are what we call a comfort purchase. Some sort of saying, “I still deserve nice things, even if it’s just in smaller doses.”

The Aesthetics of Coping

We’re not going to sit here and pretend that lipstick for one, is something that is practical. No one is buying that crimson red lipstick because their other red-related shades ran out.  These are what we call feeding the human need for aesthetics.

It is some way of belonging and somehow, in today’s digital age, when you show that little luxury item you bought on Instagram, your life may look a bit intact. Because in tough times, appearances matter even more and not less. Looking good nowadays is a social stamp that proves you’re doing okay and that you belong. Even if your bank account disagrees.

A Marketer’s Take on the Lipstick Effect

From a marketing perspective, the lipstick effect is some kind of treasure. In times of economic downturn, consumers tend to naturally get attracted towards “affordable luxuries.” This could be leveraged by brands because it means brands can position small, attainable products as “emotional lifelines”, too much?

Maybe as emotional support products then rather than mere products. Smart marketers highlight empowerment, self-care, and little joys in their campaigns. Their mindset is set to convince the consumer that this item is “luxury made accessible” or “confidence in a pocket-sized package.”

Wrapping It Up!

The lipstick effect is not really about lipstick. Unlike what the name suggests, though. This is about the psychology of wanting joy through purchases when joy may feel expensive to afford. Whether it’s that social media chic glam belonging feeling, aesthetic obsession, or a coping mechanism, one thing is clear: humans will always find a way to make room for the little things.

And honestly? Brands could be smart and leverage that to their side and sales advantage. Ethics are not in question here, people, because individuals are buying at their own freedom so…. Proceed and happy sales surge in advance.
