I wake up at 6.30 am. As usual, The first thing that comes to my mind is to check my social networks.. I eat my breakfast then I get ready to go to work.. I sit on my desk, here, at one of the biggest social media marketing agencies. It’s been more than a year since I joined this field.. A year which was more than enough to have a closer look, to passionately observe and for my mind afterwards to start its usual skepticism by asking many questions, the most significant of which was:
Have we lost our freedom?
Who didn’t hate the heavy presence of his family till he was urged to block them.. Who didn’t change his writings after a new follower he appreciates or a new friend he fears the mere change of his image in her eyes.. Who didn’t delete what he has just written because he was afraid for a fraction of possibility of his current or futuristic manager reading it which could affect his career.
On that fancy disk sits the HR Manager, He looks through the job applications he received for the open vacancy.. On his computer screen appears the applicants’ FB or Twitter Profiles, He quickly takes his decision to eliminate him or her for nothing but a post he thought was inappropriate. An event that happens every day as 1 out of 10 applicants gets rejected because of their Social Media Profiles.
On that fancy disk sits The Senior, Her experience in the field is no more than 3 years yet she has given herself a seat among Gods, The FB Gods, Those who have the absolute right to evaluate the content and judge it.. They fill the newsfeed with their criticism to this and that.. They are in a continuous hunt for mistakes and they feed on the blessings of their followers..
“The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” ― Bertrand Russell
On that fancy disk sits The Head-hunter, He starts the mission he has to accomplish.. Lost between “All that glitters is not gold” and “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire”.. Moreover, It looks like he’s going to take the easy route.. His 10 mins search has led him to her.. “Looks like she knows a lot” He concludes after having a quick look at her criticism which he assumes weren’t out of the blue. He has finally found what he has been looking for and in a record time.. His manager will appreciate this and he’ll be able to continue his journey towards level 400 of Candy Crush.
It’s 1:00 Afternoon.. A lonely drop of sweat falls on my forehead, I ask in despair, When was the last time I wrote what I truly wanted?.. Before they told me who should I be. How about you?.. When was the lost time you lost a friend because what you or he has written? When was the last time you received a silly comment on your picture? How did all the gatherings turn into a race to take selfies to brag about it later? .. When did you lose our enjoyment of the present by thinking of our online future? Thousands of eyes have been casted upon us, Our freedom to express ourselves decreased.. We voluntarily lost it in our search for a place in the Bandwagon.. Our fear of loneliness has pushed to a world where there’s no place to be yourself without modifications.. To a world where “Terms and Conditions Apply”
