It’s common that there are some days when there’s not much work to do at the office due to very few tasks and less workload. This can sometimes be like a break to refresh and boost the energy and other times it can demotivate the employees.

Staying at a company without work for a number of days can change the employees’ perception of the company.

There are some steps that you can take to motivate yourself again and stay productive but you have to ask yourself a question first to know whether these are just some days and you’ll be working again, or your company is losing clients.

Has This Been Going On For A While Or Recently?

Some companies struggle with workload due to losing clients, while others go through this time because work is stable. Which one is your company?

If your company is losing clients then you need to figure out why as some companies might start laying off employees due to this reason. So, you need to have a backup plan if you think your company is closing.

While some companies might be failing, others can have less workload due to stability and delivering tasks on time.

So, if you belong to the second type of company, here’s what you can do.

Check Your To-Do List

Check your to-do list if there are any paused projects or unfinished tasks.

Some employees tend to postpone non-urgent projects and put the urgent ones as a priority; if you still have projects on hold, then start working on them now even if they’re personal projects for just updating your portfolio.

Whatever you have on your to-do list, start doing it even if it’s just organizing your desk.

Ask Your Colleagues If They Need A Hand

You can spend your free time helping your colleagues or team with their projects.

If you’re done with your tasks, you can ask your colleagues if they need help with theirs so they can meet their deadlines. Helping your colleagues has two benefits, first, it will strengthen your relationship with them and create a strong bond, and second, it will add to your experience.

If you’re helping colleagues in other departments, this will make you learn new skills and gain different experiences in a new field.

Get Ready For Your Next Project

Think about tomorrow or even next week, if you have an upcoming project soon, start brainstorming now.

If there are any upcoming projects it is recommended that you prepare for them and brainstorm ideas until you and your team start working on them or if there are new clients about to join, you can spend your free time learning about them and their competitors to be able to understand them and their brand.

Use The Free Time And Learn Something

You can find many free online courses, sign up and learn something new.

There are many online courses, you can start one of them during this free time to enrich your resume and portfolio. Learning something new will broaden your experience and make you understand other fields.

Learning other skills can improve you and enhance your productivity, which will affect your performance.

Ask Your Manager To Learn Something New

You don’t have to be committed to your tasks, you can ask your manager to give you tasks from another department just to learn new skills and broaden your experience.

Arrange a meeting with your manager and ask them to evaluate your performance and if they think you need more skills or if you need to learn something new to improve and stabilize your career.

For example, if you’re a graphic designer, you might learn video editing or motion graphic during your free time. This will enable you to get promoted fast or even receive offers from other companies.
