Food labels have never been exactly the page-turner that keeps you reading. That is, because they’re always written in tiny fonts with complicated names of ingredients and caories and more. They also include nutrition tables that inspire people’s eyes to squint rather than actually excite them to read. Enters Exposr, a US-based food scanning app that is built for the idea of pointing your phone at a product and finding out what is actually inside. The app’s capabilities are to analyze labels and barcodes.

Additionally, translate the ingredients into information that is accessible and assign a health score that shows people what they should know and what concerns they should have regarding certain products. Intriguing? Very. It reached the extent of being a trendy app as it highlighted how certain products have additives that range from potential heavy metals to microplastics. Here’s a breakdown of what the app is all about and how audiences are perceiving it.

The App Sells Clarity, Not Calories

From a marketing POV, Exposr is all about understanding something important and that is how consumers do not necessarily want more information. They may only want less confusion. The app aims to turn an overwhelming label into a quick judgement that gives users a shortcut towards answering their question on what they want instead of “what am I looking for?” This, from a marketing perspective, is a strong proposition that simply shows the app has more than just another database to offer regarding nutritional information.

Fear Gets Attention While Transparency Builds Trust

What we mostly found clever was the app’s name itself. “Exposr” sounds like an investigator who does the detective work for your grocery cart instead of letting you handle all the hard work by yourself. A product with Exposr becomes something to be discovered. All you do is scan, reveal, react, and share. It’s a formula of creative storytelling that allows the app to be the talk of the town. A formula that is made for social media where curiosity is currency. One that is based on “You won’t believe what’s in this.” A sentence that is read or heard and makes people stop whether to listen or to see.

The App’s Value Proposition

Of course, Exposr is entering an increasingly crowded category. Yuka, a French-based food scanning app, is one that has already helped popularize the idea of scanning food and receiving an easy-to-understand health assessment. That is, with millions of products in its database. Exposr therefore needs more than mere functionality to stand out. Its differentiation lies in going deeper into the “hidden” side of food, including its focus on additives, heavy metals, microplastics, glyphosate and brand ownership. A proposition that may allow it to stand out from the crowd.

Audience Reception of The App

The app is only so far available on the Apple Store, only for iOS systems and developers haven’t yet activated it on Android play stores. The official rate on iOS is 4.7. However, the app trended because people started realizing that its scanning is actually efficient. That is, as their social media page on Instagram showed how certain big brand names use additives that are hazardous to human health in products like chocolate, cereal, chicken, and more. This is when the app became a trendy asset that people are urging one another to use in order to know what they buy and what they have been missing.

A Product That Educates & Empowers

Ultimately, Exposr is participating in a bigger change in consumer behavior. One where people now want to know what sits behind the branding, packaging and health claims. Its strongest marketing territory, then, is not simply “eat healthier.” It is “know before you choose to buy.”

And that is a much more powerful message. Because when the aisle of groceries becomes a place of questions, the brand that helps consumers find the answers becomes part of the shopping trip.
